Reaction Steps
A mixture of the above ester (7.4 g, 16.5 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (1.44 g, 36.1 mmol) was combined in THF (150 mL) and cooled in ice under N2 atmosphere. Enough distilled water was added portionwise until the hydroxide was dissolved (~15 mL) and the mixture was maintained at 0° for 2 h, then allowed to warm to ambient temperatures with stirring for 15 h. The reaction mixture was evaporated in vaccuo, the residue cooled in ice and treated with 2M aqueous HCl solution with stirring. The whim precipitate was collected by vacuum filtration, washed with water and air dried. This material was crystallized from boiling heptane, filtered hot, and dried overnight on an abderhalden apparatus (refluxing acetone) to give 4.6 g of the title compound as a white powder, mp 116°-118° C.
