To a solution of 2.55 g (10 mmol) of 3-(1-(benzyloxyimino)ethyl)benzylalcohol in 20 ml of dry diethyl ether was added dropwise 1.35 g (4.5 mmol) of phosphorous tribromide with ice-cooling. The mixture was removed from an ice bath and stirred at room temperature for 6 hours. To the reaction mixture were added ice water and diethyl ether. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and separated. The organic layer was washed successively with an about 5% aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate and water, then dried and concentrated to obtain 2.78 g (8.74 mmol) of 3-(1-(benzyloxyimino)ethyl)benzylbromide.
