A solution of 1 g (4 mmol) of methyl 4-(aminothioxomethyl)-5-methylthiothiophene-2-carboxylate (Maybridge, Cornwall, UK) was reacted with 987 mg (4 mmol) of 2-bromo-4′-nitroacetophenone in a manner similar to Example 8, step (a) to give methyl 4-(4-(4-nitrophenyl)(1,3-thiazol-2-yl))-5-methylthiothiophene-2-carboxylate (1.7 g, quantitive yield) as a brown solid. 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6; 300 MHz) δ8.57 (s, 1H), 8.34 (s, 4H), 8.25 (s, 1H), 3.94 (s, 3H), 3.81 (s, 3H). Mass spectrum (MALDI-TOF, CHCA matrix, m/z): Calcd. for C16H12N2O4S3 393.0 (M+H), found 392.8.
