Reaction Steps

Methyl 4-cyano-5-(methylsulfonyl)thiophene-2-carboxylate (2 g, 8 mmol) was refluxed with 0.5 M sodium methoxide in methanol (16 mL) for 15 minutes. The solution was cooled, the crystallized solid collected on a Buchner funnel and washed with methanol (50 mL) to give methyl 4-cyano-5-methoxythiophene-2-carboxylate (1.145 g, 73%) as a solid. 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6; 300 MHz) δ8.87 (s, 1H) 4.19 (s, 3H), 3.82 (s, 3H).
