Thionyl chloride (5 ml) was added to a suspension of the 1-[(2-methyl-5,8-dihydro-4-quinolinyl)methyl]-1H-indole-5-carboxylic acid from step (402a) (0.67 g, 2.1 mmol) in methylene chloride (15 ml) and was heated to reflux for 2 hs. The reaction was cooled to room temperature, concentrated in vacuo to give the 1-[(2-methyl-5,8-dihydro-4-quinolinyl)methyl]-1H-indole-5-carbonyl chloride (0.68 g, 80%) as a yellow solid.
