To a solution of N-(4-chlorobenzyl)-7-ethyl-2-(3-hydroxy-1-propynyl)-4-oxo-4,7-dihydrothieno[2,3-b]pyridine-5-carboxamide (Example No. 14) (0.200 g) in pyridine (10 mL) is added succinic anhydride (0.639 g). The reaction is stirred at rt for 18 h then at 40° C. for 1 h. The reaction mixture is concentrated in vacuo. The residue is suspended in H2O (25 mL) and stirred for 1 h. An off-white solid is filtered off and recrystallized from ethanol to yield 0.210 g (84%) of the title compound as a pale yellow, crystalline solid.
