Procedure

A suspension of 13 (3.9 g) in CH2Cl2 (200 mL) was treated with pyridine (10 mL), methanesulfonyl chloride (4 mL), and a catalytic amount of dimethylaminopyridine at 0° C., under an N2 atmosphere, for 2 h. The reaction was allowed to warm to ambient temperature overnight. The reaction was partitioned between 1:1 Et2O/hexanes and brine. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4), filtered, and evaporated. The residue was purified by chromatography (silica gel, 1:1 EtOAc/hexanes) giving 1.05 g of methanesulfonic acid 2-cyano-6-methanesulfonyl-benzofuran-3-yl ester 14.
