To a solution of 4-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-[3-(11-cyano-6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]thiepin-11-yl)propyl]piperidin-4-ol (1.92 g) in dichloromethane (30 ml) at −78° C. was added 1M diisobutyl aluminum hydride dichloromethane solution (10 ml). The reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature, and stirred for 30 minutes. Water and dichloromethane were added to the reaction mixture, the organic layer was separated and washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride, and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography eluting with ethyl acetate to give the titled compound (1.16 g).
