Methanol → Methyl 2-aminoisobutyrate hydrochloride
Reaction equation
[NH2:1][C:2]([CH3:7])([CH3:6])[C:3]([OH:5])=[O:4].S(Cl)([Cl:10])=O.[CH3:12]O>>[ClH:10].[NH2:1][C:2]([CH3:7])([CH3:6])[C:3]([O:5][CH3:12])=[O:4]Participants

Procedure
A solution of 2-aminoisobutyric acid (51.7 g) in methanol (500 mL) at 0° C. was treated with thionyl chloride (80.4 g) over 35 minutes, stirred for 30 minutes, warmed to room temperature, heated to 50° C. for 3 hours, cooled to room temperature, and concentrated. The concentrate was dissolved in methanol (200 mL), concentrated, dissolved in warm methanol (50 mL), treated with diethyl ether (300 mL), and filtered. The resulting solid was dried under vacuum (100 mm Hg) at 50° C. with a nitrogen bleed to provide 59.6 g of methyl 2-amino-2-methylpropanoate hydrochloride.
