In a three neck 1 L round bottom flask under argon, 2-methylserine (35.0 g, 0.2936 mol) was suspended in methanol (300 mL). To this was added 4N HCl/dioxane (85 mL) and the reaction mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 16 h. The reaction mixture had become a clear colorless solution. Dry HCl gas was bubbled into the reaction mixture for 5 min. and the reaction mixture was then stirred at 60° C. for 4 h. It was then cooled and the excess reagent/solvent was removed under reduced pressure at 65° C. to 70° C. to give the desired product (yield 48.2 g, 96%) as an yellow sticky oil.
