Add cold trifluoroacetic acid (600 ml) (ice bath) to N[1(S)-ethoxycarbonyl-2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl]-(S)-alanine, t-butyl ester (25.5 g) and stir the resulting mixture at room temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere for 4 hours. Concentrate the solution in vacuo to give a viscous oil. Triturate the viscous oil with hexane (3 1) and then ether to yield N-[1(S)-ethoxycarbonyl-2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl]-(S)-alanine.
