1.6 g of trans-1,2,3,4,4a,5,10,10a-octahydro-6-methoxy-N-n-propylbenzo[g]quinoline are dissolved in 100 ml of methylene chloride. 1.5 ml of boron tribromide, dissolved in 20 ml of methylene chloride are added dropwise and the mixture is stirred for 1.5 hours at room temperature. An excess of methanol is added to the mixture which is then concentrated in vacuum. This is repeated twice.
