Procedure
1,2,3,9-Tetrahydro-9-methyl-3-[(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1yl)methyl]-4H-carbazol-4-one (0.89 g) was dissolved in ahot solution of citric acid (0.58 g) in ethanol (20 ml) and allowed to crystallize. The resulting crystalline solid was recrystallized by dissolving in acetone/water (2:1, 2 ml) and diluting with acetone (20 ml) to give the title compound (0.6 g) m.p. 162°.
