The evaporation residue obtained in step (a) is dissolved in a mixture containing 19.5 g of concentrated sulfuric acid, 150 ml of water and 400 ml of tetrahydrofuran. The mixture is stirred for 3 h at room temperature. The solution is neutralized with 2M sodium hydroxide solution and the solvent is evaporated. The product is extracted in toluene containing ethyl acetate. The solution is dried over sodium sulfate. The solvent is evaporated, and the residue is recrystallized from toluene. The yield is 12.0 g (27% from desoxybenzoin) of a product having m.p. 150°-3° C.
