Procedure
A solution of 18.0 g (0.053M) of 4-(4-methylphenylsulfonyl)-thiophene-2-sulfonyl chloride, 46.0 g (0.258 m) N-bromosuccinimide and 100 mg benzoyl peroxide in 175 ml CHCl3 was heated at reflux and irradiated with a sun lamp for 45 minutes. The cooled mixture was then extracted with 3×100 ml portions of water, 5% sodium thiosulfate, brine and dried. The solvent was stripped to give the title compound as an oil.
