Procedure

24 mg of 5'-[2-(4-benzyloxy-2,6-dimethylphenyl)acetamido]-2',5'-dideoxy-5-ethyluridine were dissolved in 50 ml of methanol and the solution was hydrogenated over 15 mg of 5% palladium-on-charcoal catalyst at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure for 72 hours. The catalyst was removed by filtration and the filtrate was evaporated to give 15 mg of 2',5'-dideoxy-5-ethyl-5'-[2-(4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylphenyl)acetamido]uridine of melting point 221°-225° C. (decomposition).
