Procedure
To 2,4-difluoro-3,6-dimethylaniline (3.1 g) are added 42% tetrafluoroboric acid (9 ml) and water (4.5 ml) with stirring and under ice-cooling, followed by dropwise addition of a solution of sodium nitrite (1.6 g) in water (3.2 ml) below 10° C. After stirring the mixture at 0° C. for 15 minutes, the resulting crystals are filtered, washed with a mixture of ethanol-diethyl ether (1:2) and then with diethyl ether, followed by drying under reduced pressure to give 2,4-difluoro-3,6-dimethylbenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate (1.78 g).
