20 g of 2-naphthylsulphonyl chloride in 150 ml of ether are added to a solution of 7.3 g of (R)-phenylalanine in 120 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide solution. The reaction mixture is stirred for 15 hours and decanted. The aqueous phase is separated, washed with ether, acidified to pH 3 with HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is dried and evaporated. The separated crystals are suspended in ether and filtered off. There are obtained 14.4 g of N-(2-naphthylsulfonyl)-3-phenyl-D-alanine, m.p. 146° C.
