Procedure

To a stirred solution of (±)-3-benzyl-1-(4-methoxybenzyl)-5′-nitro-spiro[imidazolidine-4,2′-indane]-2,5-dione from Step B (110 mg, 0.24 mmol) in acetonitrile (1.5 mL) was added dropwise a solution of ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate (395 mg, 0.72 mmol) in H2O (1 mL). After 3 h at ambient temperature, the precipitate was isolated by filtration and dried in vacuo to afford the title compound as a yellow solid. MS: m/z=338 (M+1).
