Procedure
Using the methods described above in Example 12, but substituting 2-chlorobenzenethiol for 3-(4-mercaptophenyl)-2,2-dimethylpropionic acid ethyl ester in step a, 2-[4-(2-chlorobenzenesulfonyl)phenyl]-1,1,1-trifluoropropan-2-ol was prepared. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 8.27 (dd, J=2.0 Hz, 7.6 Hz, 1H), 7.98 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 2H), 7.75 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 2H), 7.57-7.44 (m, 3H), 2.61 (s, 1H), 1.80 (s, 3H). The racemic product was resolved by chiral HPLC. The flow rate was 20 mL/min on a Chiralcel OD-H 20 mm i.d.×250 mm, 5μ column (Daciel chemical Industries LTD), using isopropyl alcohol/hexanes (10/90) as the eluent.
