A solution of (R)-2-benzyloxycarbonylamino-3-(3,4-diamino-phenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester-acetic acid (640 mg) in acetic acid (8 mL) was heated at 130° C. for 4 h. The mixture was then poured into water and cooled to 0° C. The pH was adjusted to 8 by gradual addition of solid sodium bicarbonate. The mixture was then extracted with ethyl acetate (3×100 mL), and the combined organic layers were washed with water, brine and dried over sodium sulfate. After filtration, solvents were removed to afford the title compound as a brownish foamy solid (95%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 500 MHz) δ 7.39 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H), 7.35 (s, 1H), 7.26-7.22 (m, 5H), 7.06 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 5.03 (d, J=12.5 Hz, 1H), 4.99 (d, J=13.0 hz, 1H), 4.51 (dd, J=8.5, 5.5 Hz, 1H), 3.70 (s, 3H), 3.27 (dd, J=13.5, 5.0 Hz, 1H), 3.03 (dd, J=14.0, 9.0 Hz, 1H), 2.55 (s, 3H). Mass spec.: 368.19 (MH)+.
