In 40 mL of methylene chloride, 5.70 g (10 mmol) of 3,3′,4,4′-tetrakishexyloxybiphenyl and 15.3 g (31 mmol) of 1-(16-bromohexadecyl)-2-hexyloxybenzene were dissolved. Under argon, 10.0 g (62 mmol) of FeCl3 was added to the solution, and the solution was stirred at ambient temperature for three hours. The resulting reaction mixture was put into 800 mL of methanol and filtered to obtain 102 g of a solid. The solid was purified by silica-gel column chromatography to obtain a yellow solid. The yellow solid was recrystallized from ethanol and 8.2 g of a white solid was obtained.
