Procedure
In an high pressure autoclave, 5-chloro-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one (5 g, 0.029 mol), paraformaldehyde (1.07 g) and toluene (60 ml) are heated up to 120° C. for 4 h. The mixture is cooled down to room temperature, diluted with ether and filtrated to give 5-chloro-1-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one a22 as white crystals (4.03 g, 70%). 1H NMR δH (250 MHz, C2D6SO): 3.61 (2H, s); 5.04 (2H, d); 6.26 (1H, t); 7.08 (1H, d); 7.29-7.34 (2H, m).
