3.50 g of methyl 5-methanesulfonyl-2-methyl-4-(3-pentafluorosulfanyl-phenoxy)benzoate were dissolved at −40° C. in 100 ml of 90% HNO3. The mixture was stirred at this temperature for 10 minutes and then the mixture was poured onto 800 g of ice. This mixture was stirred for 10 minutes and the product was subsequently filtered off with suction. 3.89 g of a pale yellow solid were obtained, mp 145-148° C. (with decomposition).
