A mixture of 2-(2-chloropyrimidin-4-yl)-1-(5-chloro-2-thienyl)ethanol (1 eq, 14.6 mmol) in 20 mL of isopropylamine was stirred at 110° C. in the microwave for 70 min. The solvent was evaporated and HCl 1M was added until pH=1. The resulting white precipitate was filtered and dried to afford 4.25 g of 1-(5-chloro-2-thienyl)-2-[2-(isopropylamino)pyrimidin-4-yl]ethanone (98% yield).
