Procedure

A mixture of methyl 3-(aminomethyl)-2-nitrobenzoate (8.0 g, 38.3 mmol) and 5% Pd/C (0.9 g, 5%) in methanol (500 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. The mixture was filtered and the filter cake was washed with methanol. The solvent was removed in vacuo to obtain methyl 2-amino-3-(aminomethyl)benzoate (5.0 g, 72% yield).
