Procedure
A solution of 6 (2.0 g, 4.29 mmol) in 10 wt. % methanolic KOH (45 mL) was stirred at reflux for 20 h. The resulting solution was allowed to cool to room temperature and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in H2O and the pH adjusted to a value of 7 by careful addition of 1 M aq. HCl. The aqueous phase was saturated with NaCl and extracted with EtOAc (50 mL×6). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and, concentrated in vacuo. The residue was further purified by column chromatography (eluting with EtOAc/Hexane=4:1) to yield 7 (1.09 g, 76%) as a white solid.
