Reaction Steps

To a mixture of 5 g of 5-(ethoxymethyleneamino)tetrazole in 50 ml of ethyl acetate, stirred at room temperature under nitrogen, there was added a solution of 10.2 g of methyl anthranilate in 50 ml of ethyl acetate and the mixture was stirred for 24 hours. The white solid which formed was separated by filtration, washed with ethyl acetate and vacuum oven dried to give crude N1 -(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-N2 -(2-carbomethoxyphenyl)formamidine. This was recrystallized from a mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide and ethyl acetate to give pure product identical with authentic material.
