A mixture of 2,6-dichloro-N-(2-chloro-3-fluoropyridin-4-yl)benzamide (1.12 g, 3.5 mmol) and thionyl chloride (10 mL) was heated under reflux for 18 hours then cooled to ambient temperature. The reaction mixture was diluted with toluene (10 mL) and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound as a pale brown solid (1.23 g, quant. yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 8.23 (d, J=5.1 Hz, 1H), 7.45-7.44 (m, 2H), 7.38 (dd, J=9.4, 6.5 Hz, 1H), 6.98 (t, J=5.1 Hz, 1H).
