Reaction Steps

To a stirred solution of 3-(hydroxymethyl)-8-methyl-2-o-tolylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one 1606 (2.79 g, 10 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (200 mL), MnO2 (5 g) was added and the resulting mixture was stirred at reflux for 3 h. The mixture was allowed to cool to RT, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel (10-50% EA/PE) to afford the product, 8-methyl-1-oxo-2-o-tolyl-1,2-dihydroisoquinoline-3-carbaldehyde 4101 (2.5 g, 90% yield) as a white solid.
