Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Hydrochloric Acid | HCID 313 | — |
| Reactant | 5-Chlorobiphenyl-2-ol | HCID 11827 | — |
| Reactant | Phosphorus trichloride | HCID 24387 | — |
| Product | HCID 19905546 | HCID 19905546 | — |
Reaction Steps
79.5 g (0.389 mol) of 2-phenyl-4-chlorophenol were slowly heated to 150° C. with 65.7 g (0.478 mol) of phosphorus trichloride. Hydrogen chloride was evolved at the same time. When the reaction was complete, the mixture was distilled at 0.027 kPa. 80 g (67% of theory relative to the 2-phenyl-4-chlorophenol employed) of the abovementioned substance passed over at a temperature of 145° to 146° C. (see formula sheet, formula V where R1 =2-chloro and R2 =H)
