Procedure
Sodium carbonate (30 g, 0.28 mol) was added to a solution of XVIII in water (250 mL). The solution was then vigorously stirred with ice bath cooling as 4-chloro-2-(trifluoromethyl)-pyrimidine (IV, 16.06 g, 88 mmol) was added. The mixture warmed to room temperature over a 24 hr period, and the desired product was formed as a white precipitate (21.76 g, 73.3%, mp: 144°-145° C.) which was collected, washed with water, and dried.
