Potassium tert-butoxide (1.03 g, 9 mmol) was added to a solution of 2-pyrrolidinone (0.7 g, 7.7 mmol) in anhydrous DMF (25 mL). The mixture was stirred for 45 min at room temperature to produce a milky white precipitate. A solution of XXIX (2.0 g, 7.7 mmol) in dry DMF (6 mL) was then added and the mixture slowly turned clear as it was stirred for 18 hr. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue chromatographed on neutral alumina using ethyl acetate as the eluent to give the white solid product (0.40 g, 35%, mp: 170°-172° C.).
