2.5 g of ethyl 4-methyl-2-oxopyrrolidine-3-carboxylate and 3.4 g of phosphorus pentasulfide were added to 50 ml of benzene and stirred at 50° C. for 1 hour. After cooling, the insoluble matters were filtered off and the filtrate was concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography to thereby give 2.1 g of the title compound as an oily product.
