A solution of 2-Amino-α-cyano-1,6-dihydro-5-nitro-α-(phenylmethyl)-6-oxo-4-pyrimidine-acetic acid, ethyl ester as prepared above (2.0 g) in 1N NaOH (100 mL) is stirred at room temperature for 1 h and is acidified with 4N HCl (30 mL). The precipitate is collected by filtration and dried under vacuum to give 2-Amino-1,6-dihydro-5-nitro-6-oxo-α-(phenylmethyl)-4-pyrimidineacetonitrile (600 mg, 36%). ##STR13##
