Procedure

To a solution of ethyl (2E)-3-[4-(5-bromo-3-pyridyl)-1-ethyl-6-methyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-yl]acrylate (47 mg) in MeOH (2 ml) was added nickel chloride hexahydrate (7.26 mg) and sodium borohydride (10.7 mg) at −10° C. and the mixture was stirred at −10° C. for 15 minutes. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with water and dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by preparative thin layer chromatography eluting with a mixture of EtOAc and n-hexane (1:1.5) to give ethyl 3-[4-(5-bromo-3-pyridyl)-1-ethyl-6-methyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-yl]propanoate (12 mg) as a light yellow oil.
