Methyl 5,6-dihydroxy-2-thien-2-ylpyrimidine-4-carboxylate (A-2) was dissolved in DMF and 2.0 eq. of 4-fluorobenzylamine were added to the stirred solution. Reaction mixture was left overnight at 90° C. After cooling to room temperature 1 N HCl was added and a solid precipitated from the mixture. This solid was collected by filtration, washed with ethyl ether and dried under vacuum to afford the compound (A-3). 1H NMR (DMSO-d6, 300 MHz) δ 13.0 (s, 1 H), 12.5 (s, 1H), 9.18 (bs, 1 H), 8.03 (d, J=3.0 Hz, 1 H), 7.81 (d, J=4.8 Hz, 1 H), 7.39 (dd, J=5.7 Hz, J=8.4 Hz, 2 H), 7.19-7.2 (m, 3 H), 4.51 (d, J=6.3 Hz, 2 H).
