Reaction Steps

A solution of 2-Chloro-5-(methylthio)benzoic acid (CAS: 51546-12-4; 2.5 g, 11.8 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (50 ml) and cooled to 0° C. Oxone (21.9 g, 35.5 mmol) was added portionwise within 5 minutes. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 minutes and then at room temperature for 22 hours. The mixture was filtered. The filtrate was poured onto water (200 ml). The aqueous layer was extracted with dichloromethane (5×50 ml). The combined extracts were dried over Na2SO4, filtered and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The solid was stirred in ether (30 ml), filtered and dried (High Vacum, 50° C.) to provide 2-chloro-5-methanesulfonyl-benzoic acid (1.96 g, 70%) as a beige solid, M−H: 232.9.
