Reaction Steps

In 50 mL of methylene chloride was dissolved 10.0 g of 1-(3-hydroxy-1-azetidinyl)-1-ethanone, and 31.2 mL of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene and 29.1 g of trityl chloride were added thereto under ice-cooling, after which the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was poured into 100 mL of ice water and the organic layer was separated. The organic layer was washed with diluted hydrochloric acid, water and a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then distilled under reduced pressure to remove the solvent. Diisopropyl ether was added to the residue and the crystals precipitated were collected by filtration to obtain 21.7 g of 1-[3-(trityloxy)-1-azetidinyl]-1-ethanone as light-yellow crystals.
