Procedure
In a manner similar to that of Example 4a, by reacting 400 mg (0.88 mmol) of 4-[(E)-3-oxo-3-(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-4-p-tolyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphthyl)propenyl]benzoic acid (Example 23) with 428 mg of cerium chloride heptahydrate and 40 mg of sodium borohydride. The desired product is obtained in the form of a white solid (m=200 mg; yield=50%; m.p.=179° C.).
