To a solution of 2-chloro-N-m-tolyl-acetamide (580 mg, 3.16 mmol) and phenyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (677 mg, 3.16 mmol) in acetone (20 mL) was added potassium carbonate (502 mg, 3.63 mmol) and potassium iodide (26 mg, 0.16 mmol) and the mixture was heated to reflux overnight. The mixture was concentrated under vacuum, water was added, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic extracts were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated under vacuum. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel using hexane/ethyl acetate (2:1) as eluent to provide the desired product. MS (DCI-NH3): m/z 379 (M+NH4)+.
