Fexofenadine base was suspended in a 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (250 ml). The mixture was stirred to get a clear solution The clear solution was then quenched at room temperature into a mixture of acetic acid (35 gms) in water (250 ml). The mixture was stirred for 1 hour at room temperature and the solids filtered and washed with water to obtain a neutral pH. The solids were dried under vacuum at 60°-70° C. until the moisture content was between 3.5% to 4.2%.
