Procedure

10.5 g (0.15 mol) of sodium nitrite in 50 ml of water are added dropwise at 0° C. to a solution of 17.0 g (0.15 mol) of 1-methyl-2,3-pyrrolidinedione (H. Rapoport et al., J. Org. Chem. 40 (1975) 1264). The mixture is stirred for a further 2 hours, the deposited product is filtered off and 12.0 g (58%) of 1-methyl-2,3,4-pyrrolidinetrione-4-oxime are obtained.
