Procedure
Compound 8a (0.7 g, 1.79 mmol) was converted to the corresponding free base by partitioning between 0.1M aqueous NaOH (200 ml) and diethyl ether (200 ml). The phases were separated and the aqueous phase was extracted twice with ether. The combined ethereal phases were dried and evaporated. The residue was dissolved in dry methylene chloride (20 ml). Acetic anhydride (0.22 g, 2.15 mmol) was slowly added with ice cooling. After completed addition the mixture was stirred for one hour at room temperature. Methylene chloride (50 ml) and water (50 ml) was added and the aqueous phase was separated. The organic phase was dried and evaporated and the crude product purified by column chromatography, first with methylene chloride, then with methylene chloride/methanol (19:1 ), as eluent. Yield 400 mg, mp 118°-120° C.
