Procedure
To a solution of methyl 1-(2-fluoro-4-iodo-benzyl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridine-2-carboxylate (0.46 g, 1.09 mmol) in methanol (4 ml) was added 1M aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (1.4 ml, 1.40 mmol) and the reaction was heated at reflux for 1.5 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and azeotroped with toluene (15 ml), methanol (15 ml), toluene (15 ml) and dichloromethane to afford the crude title compound as a waxy white solid (0.50 g, quantitative yield). LCMS (method B): RT=2.11 min, (M−H)−=395; M+H+=397.
