Procedure
To a mixture of ethyl 2-benzoyl-4-hydroxy-5-methoxy-benzoate (reference example 17-1) (550 mg) and dichloromethane (10 mL) was added fuming nitric acid (85 μL) at room temperature. After stirring for 20 minutes, water and dichloromethane were added to the mixture. The separated organic layer was brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (806 mg).
