Next, to a stirred solution of benzyl 5-formyl-1-methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate (400 mg, 1.64 mmol) in acetone (25 mL) is added a solution of potassium permanganate (520 mg, 3.29 mmol) in 40 mL acetone/water (1:1) dropwise and the mixture is stirred for 3 hours. The mixture is poured into a solution of 60 mL 10% NaHSO3 in 1N HCl and the mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The combined organic layers are washed with water and brine then is dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent is removed under reduced pressure to give the title compound. HPLC retention time 1.10 minutes (condition C); MS 260.3 (M+H).
