Ethyl 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-methylisoxazole-5-carboxylate (12.4 g, 47.5 mmol), NBS (10.1 g, 57.0 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (1.15 g, 4.75 mmol) were added to 250 mL of carbon tetrachloride and the mixture was refluxed for 16 h. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate was removed in vacuo to give a brown solid, which was used in the next reaction without purification. MS: (+) m/z 340.35, 342.33 (M+1, 79Br/81Br).
