A solution of methyl (4-chloro-2-{[2-methyl-5-(propylsulfinyl)phenyl]ethynyl}phenoxy)acetate (Intermediate 221, 125 mg; 0.31 mmol) in MeOH (5 ml) was treated with a 1M solution of sodium hydroxide in water (0.93 ml; 0.93 mmol). After stirring for 3 hours, the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the residue was taken up in AcOEt and extracted with 0.1N HCl. The organic phase was dried on MgSO4 and concentrated to give a residue which was triturated in diethyl ether, to afford the title compound as a pale yellow solid (101 mg, 83%).
