A mixture of 0.119 g of sodium borohydride and 10 ml of water was treated dropwise at 0° C. with a solution of 5.00 g of 4-[2',3'-difluoro-4"-(4-oxo-butyl)-1,2':4',1"-terphenyl-4-yloxy]-butyl acrylate in 50 ml of dioxan. The mixture was subsequently stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was poured into 50 ml of water, the phases were separated and the aqueous phase was extracted twice with 25 ml of ethyl acetate each time. The combined organic phases were washed twice with 50 ml of water each time, dried over magnesium sulphate, filtered and concentrated. Chromatographic purification of the residue on silica gel with cyclohexane/ethyl acetate (vol. 8:2) gave 4.49 g of 4-[2',3'-difluoro-4"-(4-hydroxy-butyl)-1,2':4',1"-terphenyl -4-yloxy]-butyl acrylate.
